Did Miss Mayweather (Friend of Emily Bronte) and her dog Anklebiter manage to walk across the moor without?
getting seduced by Rodger Darkwater and what happened to her little basket with the stawberries?
It was a near thing, it was. One had to wonder what Miss Mayweather was doing walking unescorted across a moor, being that she is an attractive (although not beautiful) young unmarried miss. However, this is the country, so rules are relaxed (but she really ought to be more careful, a womans reputation is worth its weight in rubies).
Being as it was, she was hurrying across the moor with a basket of strawberries to take to the local gossip, Harriet Bluestocking, who was making preserves for the local fair, which was comming up soon. The preserves were to be sold there.
En Route, she came across Rodger Darkwater, the acknowledged bastard half- brother of the Earl of Nonsence. He pulled her into a passionate embrace and she promptly coshed him in the head with her basket of strawberries, scattering them everywhere. Then she shoved some strawberries up his nose, and then Anklebiter chased after him, with his customary ankle- biting defense. As Anklebiter took care of the rouge, our heroine gathered up what she could of the remaining strawberries, despite the large hole she now had in her favored basket. She ran all the way to Harriet Bluestockings, but it was too late. Rodger Darkwater had already been past, the gossipmongrel had caught a glimpse of his strawberried face with Anklebiter chasing after him, and Miss Mayweather’s reputation was already sullied. Seeing a breathless Miss Mayweather, her clothes rumpled, a ruined basket half full of strawberries…. the damage was done!
