It’s ok.
You gotta learn the theory man. One really easy way to make yourself sound better than 98% of people in pop music is to take voice lessons. Take them from a voice professor at a college, who actually understands how to make a great musical sound with the voice. ..that way, you know that your money is well-spent.
Develop a great vocal technique, and work on your ear. If you can’t hear it in your head, don’t sing it. You should be able to sing ANYTHING, in tune (i.e., in the middle of the note), without any instrumental accompaniment (A capella). If you can HEAR it, you can sing it well. If I say “sing a G,” you should be able to do that, without any help from the piano.
Also, develop your own voice….learn music theory, so that you don’t have to follow a few standardized chord progressions. 98% of pop music sounds exactly the same, b/c they do not understand the theory. Every song should sound dramatically different, since you have something different to say.
You have some raw talent there…..if you work REALLY hard, you will be better than anyone in pop music…..in the league of Mariah Carey…..one of VERY few pop singers with an understanding of music theory….that’s her big secret. Patti Labelle had more raw, natural talent than anyone I’ve ever seen, but she never developed it. Develop it, man. If you do it right, you will understand why I say this:
“Mastering music is the hardest thing I’ve ever done…..harder than my time in the Marine Corps.”
