Can a mean dog learn to get along with a kitten?
My mom has a scottish terrier that has been known to kill stray kittens that have wondered into our fenced yard. I really want to get a kitten, but im not sure if her dog would always be trying to get at it or if he would learn to get along with it. Right now, im thinking this is a bad idea and I should get another dog instead.
I think the answer is right in front of you. I don’t know how old mom’s Scottie is, or what training he’s had. Unfortunately, it’s obvious that he doesn’t get along with cats in his yard. Terriers are quite territorial. Unless they’re raised together, and you and your mother are prepared to do some extensive training and socialization work with the wee laddie, I would caution against it. Also, be careful in introducing a new dog into the equation as well. Right now, your Scottie is the head dog on the property, and can be depended upon to defend it with whatever he deems necessary. If you really need two dogs, take some time and do the research on breeds. Also, a female pup would probably be more readily accepted than another male. Hopefully your Scottie has been neutered.
Again, just be careful. Your Scottie has already given you the answer. Also, because he really doesn’t like cats doesn’t necessarily make him “mean,” per se. It does make him a dominant male terrier. If he has other “mean” symptoms, you need to get him into training with a professional.
