Should I learn Korean from a friend or a tutor?
I am planning on learning Korean, and I wanted to get a tutor. I told my Korean friend about this and she told me that she could teach me. But the thing is that she doesn’t know a lot of the complicated words, so she’s *technically* not fluent. Money isn’t a big problem, so I was wondering, should I get a tutor, who is fluent, but costs a lot more. Or, should I learn from my friend, who costs less (I would be paying her), but isn’t completely fluent?
Teachers can explain to you the reasons behind why you say this and not that. Native speakers can only tell you what is wrong or right based on the reasoning of “just because.” A tutor is also going to have a lot more learning materials at hand for you than your friend will. Your tutor will have been trained on how to approach beginning to teach you the language and will have years of experience from it.
You can use your friend as a practice tool, but she should not be a teacher for you.
