Is there a way to become a game(level) designer without learning programming language(s)?
I was hoping to persue a career involving games but am not very fond of learning languages such as C++ or java. Are there any fields in the game industry that allows you to be directly involved with video games without having to use programming language?
If so, which colleges offer the best courses?
Yes there are. I have interviews lined up for jobs in the games industry and I don’t even know what C++ is! However, you need to be either a programmer or an artist – either a 2D or 3D artist.
A person with the title “game designer” will have programming experience. However, there are also many other concept art and design roles which don’t require any, including designing the layout and appearance of the levels. And then there are the modellers and animators – there’s a huge demand for those. You could go to college and study drawing and 3D modelling, or 3D modelling and animation, in which case you could get a job actually creating game levels. I took a games-oriented university course and level design was one of the module options, requiring no programming experience. You do need to learn how to use 3D software, though. Check out 3D courses at some art colleges if you’re interested in this option.
