question about a comforter for my 18month old….?
My little boy is 18 months old and he will not have a comforter, when he is tired he wants to be touching skin, skin on skin contact for example, he wants me to hold his hand, stroke his face, stroke his legs and feet, even when he is in his pram when he is tired he wants me to stroke his hand, which is obviously awkward.
I have tried to give him teddy bears, blankets, taggies, anything to try and move his comfort from skin to something else.
He does have a dummy but this doesn’t cut if for him, he has to be touching skin when he’s sleepy, luckily he goes to sleep on his own in his cot but when we are out and about, in the car or pram, he wants to be holding my hand.
Can anyone give me any tips to try and stop this? I’ve bought him teddies etc and he doesn’t bother with any of it. I did breastfeed him for 9 months and he slept with me until 9 months also, is this the reason?

It is just you or other people that he wants skin contact with? Children at this age are very securely attached to their carers and find comfort and security in being close. Having breast fed meant you shared an extra bond with your child which is a fantastic thing to do.
As regards to the skin contact..he’s getting older so it may be something he grows out of. As he drops his sleeps and develops, you may find he isn’t as interested in comforters.
How does he react when introduced to comforters such as a teddy or blanket? Sometimes children don’t like change in routine so it could just be that?
As he gets older, it’s best not to introduce any new comforters to him. Sending him to a pre school so that he could be around children of a similar age, could distract him from wanting skin to skin contact and give him the chance to experience the ways other children behave.
