Feeling bad giving my 1 week old baby a dummy – pacifier?
I’d always sworn to not give my children a dummy, but after a week of coping with the demands of a screaming new born baby and a 3 year old (both boys), I gave the baby a dummy to help him settle.
He’s voraciously breastfeeding (& that is going fine), but he seems to be constantly chained to my breast or screaming. He was falling asleep on my breast after LONG feeds, but would soon wake up when I tried to take him off to put him in his basket. The dummy has given me some respite as he seems to be able to drop off to sleep.
The dichotomy is that I am worried that the dummy might affect the baby’s breastfeeding & development, although he’s feeding every 1-2 hours. I only introduced the dummy today as I feel at breaking point trying to accommodate two young children’s needs.
My husband’s a great help; I’m dreading him going back to work next week. I wish I was going back too – it is much less work!
First I want to say you are doing a great job. Giving him a dummy is not going to harm him. He obviously loves to suck so sucking on a dummy will help you with that. My son was the same way and when you do have another toddler to take care of you have to do what you have to do. My daughter was almost three when my son was born and I do know how hard it is to take care of a demanding newborn who always wants to nurse and a almost three year old who is getting into trouble all the time to get your attention. I know this sounds easier then it is to be done but stay calm and the dummy will help you get more things done as well as spend time with your three year old. It does get better. Once when your newborn is on a schedule and your other son gets use to him being there it will be better. I do agree going to work is a lot less stressfull but if you being home for now is a great thing for both kids.
Oh and the hospital gave my son a dummy when he was three days old I was not happy about it at first until I realized that when he was sucking on it, it made him so relaxed and I could change his diaper without any problems other then being peed on every now and then. LOL I am also breastfeeding my son who is now 13 months old and he has never had issues with the dummy or the breast. I think it is because nothing comes out of the dummy and milk obviously comes out of the breast so I think they just natually realize how to do both.
