I want to learn to play the snare drum where do I start?
I play trumpet in school band and I just want to learn how to play the snare. I mentioned it to my band director and she said she doesn’t want to because I’m good with trumpet and she didn’t want me to switch instruments. But I still want to play trumpet in band I just want to learn snare for fun. Where do I start?

Most music students find it easy to learn a second instrument because music theory remains the same from one instrument to the next. The only challenge is learning technique that is specific to the snare drum. There are two ways to do this:

Taking private lessons is the best method, but purchasing an instructional book is the most affordable.
To find a drum:
1. Rent (or purchase) one from your local music store.
2. Purchase a used snare drum from a used music dealer, if one is available in your area.
3. Find one at www.craigslist.com. You will need a snare drum stand, drumsticks, and probably a music stand and a snare drum case.
4. Find a former band student who no longer needs their snare drum and would be willing to sell it to you.
