What is the best way to prolong the life of the bulb in a multimedia projector?
There’s no getting around the fact that the projector will be in use a lot of the time. But I’ve heard conflicting stories about bulbs. 1. That bulbs have a finite lifespan calculated in hours. 2. That bulbs only ever die because of the strain of switching between on and off states, and in theory a bulb left on forever would never die. Even if there’s an element of truth to both of these things, where do you think the line should be drawn? If I know there will be an hour where the projector will not be in use, should I shut it down for that hour then bring it back up, or should I just leave it on all day and power it down only at night, even if there are sporadic times where it will not be in use throughout the day?
Both of the previous posters were right about the bulb, except that most projectors use chemical bulbs like xenon, not traditional incandecent bulbs. Most projectors have a setting to conserve the life of the bulb by reducing the brightness, if you projector does not you can usually do it manually by adjusting the brightness. However, on some projectors when you turn down the brightness you are not actually dimming the bulb but dimming the control (as in some DLP and LCD projectors). Your best bet is to just use the conservation setting, the will significantly reduce brightness.
Bulbs do have a finite life, but the life is average and can be estimated in hours. The easiest thing to do the conserve the life of your bulb is allow it time to cool down, some people just unplug their projectors after their use, which significantly runs down the life of the bulb. Furthermore, most projectors have lamp time to let you know how long the bulb has been on for. If your bulb has gone prematurly already it could be covered under the warranty. (Typical bulb warrantys are about 500 hrs)
