what would you do with a large puddle that ducks can swim in and frogs live in but dries in june?
There are some reeds, about two square feet of them and tall grasses. I guess just leaving it would be fine, but I’d like to make it more wildlife friendly. On a budget. Retired.
In general, if you dig a pond deeper, relative to its surface area, it will be more resistant to drought. Even if you can only dig out an additional 2 feet and use the earth to dam around it you will improve the retention. Be careful though to check levels in your yard so that you don’t block the yard’s run-off into your pond.
This spring, watch how water drains in your yard. You may be able to make some gentle, grassy swales that direct even more run-off into your pond.
Also if you want your pond to be wildlife friendly, make the north bank (south facing north bank) a very gentle slope so that wildlife has easy access to your pond. Depending where you live, some animals will find that south facing slope enticing to sun themselves. (turtles, alligators, otters, etc.)
Of course the reeds, cat tails and grasses are vital to the birds for perches and concealment. The cat tails will also help keep your pond clean.
