What Would Be a Good Starter Dog For a 12 Year Old Boy?
My little brother wants to get a puppy for his birthday that is good for security and is good for a first time dog owner, what should he get?
Yes it will be a family pet and what he ment was playful and fun or very intelligent. =)
Dogs are not security systems. They are dogs. Yes, they do bark and will protect what they deem as “their domain”, but they should not be relied on solely for home protection. That said, any puppy, when raised correctly and with the proper training, would make a gentle, loving pet for your brother. If he is not planning on showing the dog, a pure bred is not really necessary. I would suggest you try your local shelters and rescue groups who always have puppies looking for loving homes. In my experience, a medium to larger breed or mix would be best for a young boy. German Shepherd mixes or lab mixes tend to be fairly easy to train and make loving, loyal family pets. Good Luck
