Soft Knit
Has anyone tried this knitting stitch? Can it be used as lace in clothing?
I’m going to be making a black knee lenth skirt, plain, and A-line. I wanted to knit the Veil Stitch and have it be an overlay, like lace, on the skirt. Can this be done or will it look weird? The yarn I’m using is fairly soft and when knit with 4gauge needles there are 6 stitches per inch. Is this too thick?
You’ll need to do a test swatch and see what the pattern looks like when knitted. The success or failure of the veil stitch hinges on the laciness of the finished pattern and it depends on the fineness of the yarn and the size of the needles. If the yarn is fairly fine and soft you should be successful, if you think the swatch looks a little dense them you can try slightly larger needles, which will make the holes larger. Too large a needle will make the stitch look loopy and floppy; the stitch does need to be close so it stays together. A link to the yarn’s website or a picture of the yarn, with something beside it -a coin or book or pencil -for scale would really help. My personal take is to try a swatch and then use your own judgement, you know the effect you are after so you are the best judge of whether or not you are getting the results you want.
The idea of a knitted lace overlay for a skirt is a good one. If you want real versatility then make several color underskirts, so you can have black over black, black lace over purple, or royal blue or gold or whatever color you like.
