why does sound echo off of gym floors and walls?
Im doing an essay for my science class and it has to deal with acoustics and echoes. I cant seem to find any information Im looking for to answer these questions :
1) Define acoustics and explain how echoes are related to acoustics.
2) Explain why sounds echo off the walls and floors of a gym and how acoustics could be used to improve this problem.
3) Determine what type materials would be used to improve acoustics in a given room.
4) Research materials that may be used to improve the acoustics in buildings such as an opera house or a center where concerts are held. Explain why acoustics and control of echoes are important in these areas.
If anyone could help me i would greatly appreciate it. My teacher never went over anything about acoustics so im really lost. Thank You in advance for anyone who can help me.
Sound reflects (echoes) off smooth hard surfaces and gets absorbed by rough soft surfaces
The gym floor, ceiling and walls are smooth and hard = echoes
Echoes can make it hard to understand speech and make music sound funny. On the other hand echoes can add a depth and richness to speech and music. The difference it the timing of when the original sound and it’s echo arrive at the listener ‘s ear. In general the goal is to hear the original sound and one echo properly timed. Since the speed of sound is known Acoustics is the science of where to put sound reflectors and sound absorbers so that the sound and it’s echo arrive at the listeners at the proper time
