The one who built with straw was a lazy bum who didn’t think of his future and didn’t prepare for it, he just wanted to zip through the job as fast as possible so he could get a couple of cold beers out of the fridge and watch TV. He’s capable of getting a job but never spends more than a few months working in one place at a time, just long enough to buy a new pinstripe job on his poorly-maintained car. He figures “Life is short, I’m going to enjoy it while I got it.” His girlfriend supports him. When he turns 65 he will start collecting social security, all seven hundred dollars a month of it.
The one who built with sticks understood his job better, that it wasn’t smart just slapping a weak and vulnerable house together and getting it over with as fast as possible. So he went out and got some better materials but carrying the best, the heaviest and sturdiest materials, was just not in his character. He was kind of like the guy who finished high school so he could get a decent job but when it came down to it he doesn’t have a bank account and spends too much money on football tickets. When the tough times come, like now, when he loses his job because Wal-Mart has to close the store he works at, he’s going to be in real trouble.
The last one was the serious guy. He planned for and was willing to work for his future. He didn’t really build his house of brick, he bought ugly concrete block but filled the gaps with concrete and rebar. He put a solid roof on the top and covered it with slate shingles. When the bad times tried to get down the chimney he had a pot of boiling water ready for it. He’s the guy that socks a full 30% of his paycheck away into his IRA from the age of 18 and never misses an installment, and when he retires, that money will amount to a couple of million dollars. He has a well diversified portfolio and paid cash for his car, which isn’t sexy but it lasted for eighteen years. He has two credit cards which he pays off entirely every time he uses them. He never exceeds his income and he knows the value of four tailored suits over twelve suits off the rack at the local men’s department.
