Velour Doll
Making a fur-trimmed winter cape?
I just had this amazing idea! I want to make a luxurious velvet/velour cape with real fur trim and lining (not sure what kind) for winter! Not a flimsy fall one, but like, a WINTER cape, y’know?
I know how to sew by hand, but I am completely foreign with a machine. I wouldn’t mind doing it all by hand if need be. However the only thing I have sewn is dolls, pockets and a couple of clothing repairs (buttons, rips, etc..). I have tremendous amounts of patience with this type of thing.
Is it too much of a project for a beginner like me?
What tips/tricks do you have for sewing velvet and fur/leather?

You need to learn to make seams on a sewing machine. Hand sewing something that big is tedious and trying. And hand sewing if done poorly will not hold fur onto material, or hold a big heavy coat together.
All you have to learn to do do is sew the right sides of the material together. You pin every seam into place before you sew it. You learn to begin and end your line of stitching so the line will not pull out[stay stitch]. Someone who sews could show you in a few minutes. Or go find a how to lesson online.
You picked something uncomplicated to sew on, though. Capes are a bunch of big long seams.
Then you have to learn how to lay out a pattern onto your fabric. There is a picture of how to do that on the pattern, but, see below about nap!
Velvet is extremely hard to sew with, it makes professional seamstresses quake in terror. It can’t be ironed except with a velvet ironing board[it has nails in it to hold the material up so the iron does not crush the nap.} You have to sew it a certain way so the seams do not look furry. The material has to be laid out, and the pattern laid out all in one direction due to the nap of the velvet[or one half of it will look shiny, and the other will look dull. You can buy fur trim at the store by the yard, it is with the lace, that is how I bought it to trim out a Dress for a Barbie Doll. It still has to be cut correctly, as Violet shows. But it has a firm backing and is easy to sew on. I had no trouble making a hat, mitt, and dress for Barbie with it.
good luck, dear. Your idea is beautiful, one that is done in white for weddings, and has been done since forever in history.
One recommendation. Buy some material that is easy to sew with[like some poly cotton], and make a cape. You could make a black one, or a red one, and keep it for Halloween, it will someday see use. And you could learn how to sew the seams, and practice laying out the pattern. They should have their trick or treat fabrics out at the fabric store now.
Then switch over to your expensive velvet.
