How can I stop my 1 year old puppy from barking at other dogs?
I have a 1 year old saint bernard puppy and whenever i take her for a walk she wont stop barking, her tails wagging and she doesn’t sound angry but its gotten to the point where people give me dirty looks or start walking in the other direction. Ive tried telling her off and treating her when she doesn’t (usually because she hasn’t noticed the other dog yet) but nothings working…any ideas?
People always say to bring your dog to a behavioural expert. This is a good idea but I trained my dog to behave without any outside help and I believe anyone else can do the same.
1. Be in charge.
You must remember that your dog is an animal and thinks as such. He cannot understand words and will have to learn what you tone of voice means. You must never let him be in charge or he will never do as you want.
2. Be not afraid.
If your dog does not follow your instructions you must punish him. What you have to understand is that you must put yourself in his position.
You have only a very basic thought process operating mainly on primal urges, food, sex, fun etc. How do you know something is bad?
The answer is pain. A smack on the nose and a loud angry voice is necessary. This may not seem right to hurt your pet but he or she will love you in the end, I promise.
3. Be fair.
When your dog behaves you must reward him. This can be in a number of fun forms!!
With treats (I like to hide a treat in one of my hands and make him sniff it out!)
With attention, and lots of it! I’m talking about making silly playful “who’s a good dog??!”sounds combined with lots of scratching and petting (again he will associate this behaviour on your part with behaving himself!)
4. Be consistent
If you can’t keep to these rules then I advise you to seek outside help but I think this is a bit like not raising your own child. You should love and care for your dog yourself =)
Good luck with your dog. My dog is 12 years old. He has not barked at another dog in years and even learned to tolerate our new kitten that we got last year in a span of two weeks =)
