Yellow Musical
Do you have COLOUR associations with particular MUSICAL KEYS?
“Synaesthesia” is an interesting condition where people’s sense-impressions are stimulated by another sense – eg. some people associate certain musical keys with colours.
I don’t claim to be a full-on “synaesthete,” though for as long as I can remember, I’ve always had these associations:
A major = grass green
D major = bright red
E major = bright blue
F major = violet
G major = yellow
Don’t ask me why – maybe it was because I was dropped on my head when I was a baby :}
But then, Skryabin and Rimsky-Korsakov were full-on “synaethetes” – so at least I’m in good company!!

Or maybe different musical keys remind you of particular smells – yes, there are documented examples of this form of synaesthesia, too, but off the top of my head, I can’t think of any just now.

I’m a diagnosed synaesthesete, so I associate almost everything with a color. I would mention, though, that it’s probably not because I was dropped, and hopefully not you either. They think it’s caused by cross-connections in different centres of the brain that have connected certain areas that just don’t normally go together.
Here’s my list;
C major, yellowish-white, but containing many other colors;
D major; darkish blue with purple and red ‘overtones’;
E major; yellow with light greens and reds;
F major; pinkish-purple with some very light blue;
G major; green with some blues;
A major; red with a bit of yellow and pale green;
B major; blue with some purple hues and a bit of yellow;
B flat major; blue and yellow, with some light pink.
Also, a few minor keys that have quite specific colors for me:
A flat minor; dark red with a dark green and yellow;
C minor; yellowish-white with yellow, green and red;
E flat minor; dark yellow with dark green and blue overtones;
C sharp minor; same as C minor, but with muted, almost pastel-like colours.
I suppose I’m the same as you; I can’t remember ever not having associated letters, numbers and then musical sounds and keys with colours, but I was surprised when I learned that not everyone did that.
It’s funny how I can change a deep blue-sounding scale like D flat minor into a yellow one like E flat minor, just by changing the spelling. I get that idea from a story I heard of a lady who associated colours strongly with letters; she claims to have remarked to her father, at the age when she was learning how to write, how odd it was that she could change the color of a P to that of an R, just by adding an extra line.
I also heard the story of a conductor who would casually ask his orchestra to play a certain passage with ‘a bit more purple’ or ‘a much brighter orange’.
I can’t help but suspect that some of the great composers who really knew their colors (Mahler, Ravel, Respighi) were synaesthetes as well. I happen to know for a fact that Oliver Messiaen was one; he invented his own system of quasi-tonality, using several modes ‘of limited transposition’. He claimed each mode had a special color and texture in his mind. Certainly, Rimsky-Korsakoff was a great orchestrator, so one must suspect that those two things may be linked. You should give orchestration a try, but make sure not to put any arbitrary color-directives in your score; you can see from my own list that no two synaesthetes think alike.
